Switchboard upgrades

Ballard Services upgrades residential and commercial switchboards across Auckland’s North Shore to current NZ standards, with modern RCD protection. Every board we fit is labelled, tested and recorded, and the work is certified by our own Registered Electrical Inspector.

Signs your board needs upgrading

Rewireable ceramic fuses. No RCDs, or RCDs that predate current requirements. Breakers that trip under normal load. A spa, heat pump, solar array or EV charger on the wish list with nowhere to land it. An insurer asking questions about the age of the installation. Any one of these is the board telling you it belongs to another era.

Many Devonport and peninsula homes are villas and bungalows still running boards fitted generations ago. They were fine for a house with one heater and a radio. They are not fine for a house with an induction hob, two heat pumps and a car in the garage drawing seven kilowatts all night.

What an upgrade involves

Assessment first: we look at the board, the mains, the earthing and the circuits it feeds. Then a fixed quote and a drawing inside two working days, so you can see exactly what you are buying. On the day, the new board goes in with modern RCD protection, every circuit is tested and labelled, and the work is recorded and certified in-house. One visit where possible, and the power is back on before dinner.

Upgrading ahead of solar or an EV charger

The switchboard is where a whole-house energy system starts. If solar and battery storage or an EV charger is in your plans, the board has to carry it: spare ways, capacity in the mains, protection rated for the new loads. We design the board for where the house is heading, not just where it is, so the next stage drops in without redoing the last one.

Switchboard upgrades in Devonport, Takapuna and across the Shore

The board eras map onto the suburbs. Devonport and the peninsula run villa-era boards behind original hallway panels; Takapuna’s 1960s and 70s units carry first-generation breaker boards with no RCDs; the bays add coastal corrosion to whatever era they started with. We upgrade all of them from one Devonport base, minutes from the peninsula and a straight run from Takapuna.

Older and heritage homes

Peninsula housing stock rewards care. We fit modern boards into period homes without butchering original fabric: sensible locations, tidy penetrations, cabling routed to respect the building. Where the wiring behind the board also needs attention, we tell you straight and quote it fixed, because a new board on failing wiring is a tidy lie.

Every switchboard upgrade carries a 12 month workmanship guarantee. We work across the North Shore from our Devonport base.

Switchboard questions

How long does a switchboard upgrade take?

Most residential switchboard upgrades are done in a single visit, with power off for part of the day. We confirm the duration in the fixed quote, and if the board or wiring holds surprises we tell you before they cost you anything.

Do I need a switchboard upgrade for an EV charger?

Often, yes. An EV charger adds a large continuous load, and many older boards have no spare capacity or RCD protection for a new dedicated circuit. We check the board first and quote the charger and any board work as one fixed price.

Do you handle the certification?

Yes, entirely in-house. The work is tested, recorded and certified by our own Registered Electrical Inspector, so there is no waiting on a third party to sign off your board. See inspections and reports.

What does a switchboard upgrade cost?

It depends on the board, the circuits and the state of the wiring behind it, which is why we quote each job fixed rather than publishing a number that moves later. Send the address and a photo of your board and we come back inside two working days with a fixed price and a drawing. Most straightforward residential switchboard upgrades land between $[CONFIRM] and $[CONFIRM] including certification; complex boards cost more, and the quote is exact before we start.
